It always comes back around

11/03/2009

Even the most outrageous styles of music and fashion. What I mean is, no mater how crazy or hideous we think a certain fashion style is at the time, it will eventually fade away but will always come back. Take the 80′s style, skin-tight pants, day-glow colored t-shirts and hair styles that look like they came straight out of 1984. Now, the time has come torolandaxsynth start bringing instruments from the same timeframe back into it. Check out the Roland AX Synth Shoulder Keyboard Synthesizer and go back in time a couple decades. Yes, you have witnessed the official resurrection of the Key-tar! The stylish AX Synth is self-contained and equipped with powerful, solo-oriented sounds from Roland’s latest, greatest synths and is packed with cool controllers for expressive live performance. Glide your fingers over the Ribbon Controller for ultra-smooth pitch bends. A Modulation Bar and dedicated control knobs are also provided for real-time sound shaping. Wave your hand over the invisible D Beam for attention-getting effects. While the AX Synth is completely self-contained, it’s also capable of driving external instruments via MIDI. Plug into a MIDI device, and enjoy an unlimited world of sounds and textures, all controllable from the AX Synth. Looks like our friends over at Roland have done it again, thanks guys!

Control your Hardware Synths with Software

05/21/2009

Now, just to make myself very clear right from the get-go, this will not work with all hardware synthesizers, only motuvoltaCV-equipped synthesizers or modular synths. The name of the software which will open many doors for you in terms of use and versatility is Motu Volta Voltage Controlled Instrument Plugin. Ultimately what this plug-in does is turn your audio interface into a voltage control interface. Place any hardware device with a control voltage (CV) input under precise digital control from your favorite audio workstation software including Digital Performer, Logic Pro, Live and others. Now, you need to also keep in mind that this will only work with any MOTU audio interface equipped with TRS outputs, including the 24 I/O with 24 TRS outputs; expandable to 96 or any other audi0 interface with TRS outputs…the key here is that it must have TRS outputs. The technicalities are a little hard to explain but here is a video that may help to clear thing up a bit for you. Watch the tyop track in the video, that is the voltage control track affecting the synth sounds…listen closely. Now, grab some nachos and enjoy.

Studio Quality Piano Sound on Stage

05/07/2009

For keyboardists, the pursuit of the perfect piano sound in a stage environment is fleeting and difficult to accomplish even with today’s technology. It can definitely be done but many players find themselves toting numerous pieces of nordstageexequipment including the keyboards, sound modules, laptops or even desktop computer systems with multiple software applications to achieve their desired sound. Up until now, these were common solutions until the release of the Nord Stage EX 88 Key Stage Piano. This board is loaded with the finest sounding keys, synths, organs and effects that will make just about any player drool and likely not care. I’m talking about a total of 5 sections which can be used any way you see fit. I’ll break it down by section so you can fully grasp its creative capacity.

The Organ Section
The Organ Section offers three different organs. Of course, Nord included their famous B3 Organ model, giving you the most accurate and pleasing B3 next to the real thing. The B3 Organ offers many innovative solutions to mimic the typical B3 sound.

The Piano Section
The Piano Section includes six main sound groups: Grand Pianos, Upright Pianos, Electric Grand, Electric Pianos, Wurlitzer, and Clavinet. These options are easily more than enough to satisfy your true-to-life sound craving.

The Synth Section
Don’t let the panel fool you; the Stage’s Synth Section is a wolf in sheep’s clothing – small, but with a big sound. Classic Analog Synthesis with dual saw, hard sync, and pulse wave modulation as well as three-operator FM Synthesis with 32 different modulation frequencies plus wavetable Synthesis with 32 waveforms, a first for a Clavia synth.

The Extern Section
The Nord Stage wouldn’t be a master keyboard if it couldn’t control external devices with ease. The Extern Section is designed solely for this purpose, so that any MIDI-connected gear gets seamlessly integrated with the Stage’s built-in instruments. Zones, splits and layers are handled exactly as if the external equipment was a part of the Stage itself. All settings are saved together with a Program so advanced setups can be immediately recalled in real-time during a performance.

Effects
No sound is complete without the proper use of effects. In the Stage EX, Nord has incorporated all the effects required to cover musicians’ needs. All of the three instrument sections (Organ, Piano and Synth) can individually be routed through the Stage’s built-in effect units. Turning the effects on and off and controlling the routing is easily done by a touch of dedicated buttons, readily accessible at the bottom of each effects unit.

This is just a small taste of what the Stage EX can do, follow the above link for more information and prepare to have you mind blown. Thanks for reading!

Make Music on the Fly with help from Yamaha

04/29/2009

People always ask me if there is a portable solution for making music wherever inspiration strikes and there really yamahaqy100aren’t many units that I can suggest anymore with one exception, the Yamaha QY100 24 Track Sequencer. This thing has been around for quite a while but seems to really fly below the radar and to me that is quite surprising since its feature set rivals that of some more expensive keyboards in terms of sound quality and versatility. The work-flow is as follows, power on the QY100, and start building your tune with sounds ranging from drums, guitars, basses, organs, pianos and more. Program your arrangements; add effects, mix and more! The QY100 even has an input suited to both guitar and vocal and also features a built-in amp simulator for killer guitar tone and smooth microphone sound. However, if you aren’t much of a guitarist or vocalist, the QY100 is very much suited for you. The unit runs 6 hours on batteries so making music on the go is no problem however is you’re staying in to produce your tracks; Yamaha suggests using the PA-3C power supply. Finally, a musical tool that you can simply pop it into your bag or backpack and create and play anywhere, anytime!

Add sounds like none other with help from Moog

04/23/2009

Not every band can pull it off but there are some that can utilize the searing sounds of the Moog Music Standard Etherwave Theremin. It takes a masterful touch and therefore practice to get the hang of this enough to use in a live setting. Once you’ve got it, it is like riding a bike as some would say. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past few theramindecades and are unfamiliar with the Theremin, it is controlled by moving your hands in the space around its antennas which control the pitch and volume. Theremins have been used on great classic recordings like Good Vibrations and ’50s sci-fi soundtracks, and add amazing coloration to any performance or recording or can be played as a serious solo instrument. Like the Ethervox, the Etherwave is an authentic adaptation of inventor Leon Theremin’s original design. To learn more about the killer sounds attainable by use of the Theremin, click the above link and get your learn on, there is simply way too much information to cram into this blog post. There are even some sound samples to check out, enjoy!
