I’ve cover the topic of mobile recording in a few different articles within the GearBlog and all of them have had slightly different ways of monitoring your mixes. One way of monitoring would be the use of headphones. Although headphones are convenient, they skew the perception of the sound by typically adding more bass than desired. In-ear monitors are also another option but again, they alter the sound a bit and also dramatically reduce outside sound so if your assistant (if you have one) is trying to get your attention, you might not hear him. Another alternate way of monitoring in a mobile situation is a way I would have never thought of if I hadn’t found this product on the American Musical
Supply site this morning. It’s quite intriguing; the Fostex RM1 Rackmount Stereo Monitor System is the extreme alternative to any other monitoring solution I have seen.
It’s perfect, since you already have a ton of gear to haul to your session location, studio monitors would really make the transport even harder with regard to their size and weight. Another thing is the fact that studio monitors typically need to be tuned to the room in which you are monitoring your recording. If you aren’t recording in a room, rather outdoors, how do you tune them to sound good? This Fostex RM1 might be the solution for you. Personally, I could free up a lot of space in my vehicle during location/field recordings with this unit.
