The Best Budget Priced Drum Set

I’ve been asked the same question numerous times by players and parents of players for years, “What is the best drum set that sounds good and is inexpensive?” I’ve played many kits in my years of being a drummer. Beginner sets, pro level sets from companies like DW, Risen, OCP, Pearl, Tama and more. I’ve come to one conclusion and that is that budget kits are only as great as you make them. My opinion is that the best budget kit that I have heard and played that was priced below $500 is the Ddrum D2 5 Piece Drum Set with Cymbals and Throne.

Now, I want you all to keep in mind that these kits in this price range usually have some lower quality components which helps dictate their low price. I’ll tell you what I’ve found with the D2 kit. The shells are fantastic and sound amazing. It comes complete with all the hardware you need to start playing right out of the box. My gripes are about the cymbals and the throne. Honestly though, you really can’t expect professional grade cymbals at this price point so I suggest picking up a better cymbal package. Also, do yourself a favor and order some Evans drum heads to replace those included with the set. That’s what I think.

I am getting my son a drumset for christmas ,need to make decision asap. He wants the Pearl forum 5 piece set.I am going to spend about 700 ,do you have suggestion on a better set for the price. He just started playing in band that plays hard rock stuff. How do you think the Tama Imperialstar 18 compact 5 piece compares to pearl forum set?

Hi Bob, within your price range the Forum is a decent set. Personally I prefer the sound of the Ddrum featured in this post but again that is personal preference. Either way you go, you will likely need to purchase a cymbal package since those included are of very low quality. For the price I recommend the Zildjian ZBT 4 Rock Box Set which includes a Free 18 Inch Crash and Cymbal Bag and also pick up a Pearl B800W Power Pro Boom Cymbal Stand to accommodate the free cymbal. I hope this helps!

Sometimes when we look for a set of drums one question may come up, should I get an acoustic drum kit or an electronic one? It really all depends on a couple of things. Mainly, how much are you looking to spend? Do you wish to record your drum sessions? Where will you be playing and how much space do you have? And finally, which do you like more? With cb drums it is durable through and through and is intended to get the beginner started or a practice set.with CB Drums it is durable through and through and is intended to get the beginner started or a practice set.
